Choreography and movement design for Natsumi Sakamoto ‘Dismantling Motherhood’.

‘Dismantling Motherhood’ is an experimental art project that aims to “deconstruct” the word “mother” and “open up” the “ability to care for others”, inherent in motherhood. Over a period of about six months starting in September 2023, we worked with six mothers living in Yokohama, who participated via open call, to carry out multiple creative practices. This is an attempt to create a small network of mothers to listen to and express their voices in order to face the isolation of raising children in modern times. The participants shared the process of turning their gathered voices into a work of art. In this project, Ritsuko Saito collaborated on the research and management, to walk through these processes, consider and analyse them, and compile the results into a book of documentation and essays. The results of our activities based in Totsuka for half a year will be presented as a lecture performance and open studio at Murasaki Penguin Project Totsuka, which has become their base of creation.
